The alebrijes you will find at MEXOUL are created by the most renowned artisans from the towns of San Antonio Arrazola and San Martin Ticajete in Oaxaca, carved in copal wood and hand-painted with mastery only achieved after years of experience. With a lengthy work process that begins with the carving in copal wood, then leaving it to dry before painting, the processes can take up to a year as the piece must be perfectly dry before it can be painted. Once dry, it is polished before being painted, usually with natural pigments using symbols from the Mixtec and Zapotec cultures, making each piece unique. Being part of traditional Mexican art, it is believed that gifting an alebrije helps ward off evil spirits from homes, especially those with a more fierce appearance. They are also considered symbols of good luck.
